The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke doesn’t think an entire musical episode is possible

One of the highlights of The Boys Season 3 Episode 5 on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service is the big musical number featuring Frenchie (Tomer Copone) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) – it is certainly the healthiest of the season. And although it’s just one scene in one episode, could there be a whole musical episode of The Boys? According to showrunner Eric Kripke, that probably won’t happen.

“I’m a big fan of musicals,” Kripke told GameSpot. “Especially like old school, Hollywood musicals. And I’ve been dying to have like a huge innocent classic musical number on one of my shows, probably since Supernatural, but really blowing doors: a lot of backup dancers, great choreography.”

And Kripke and company did just that, putting a lot of work into the single song and dance number inside the hospital, which turned out to be one of the most delightful. However, a whole musical episode may be out of the question. “I would love that,” Kripke continued. “I don’t know how to justify it. You know, unless there’s a mass hallucination. The Boys isn’t a world you can just love cut into a musical unless everyone’s be drugged. So I would love to do a full episode musical if I knew how to achieve that, but I don’t know how to achieve that.”

Kripke jokingly mentioned that it could work as an episode of Diabolical, Prime Video’s animated spin-off anthology series.

However, the short scene between Kimiko and Frenchie dancing in the hospital required a ton of work and came with a lot of challenges. “There is obviously the choreography that Karen [Fukuhara] and tomer [Capone] have to do, but then there’s like, what’s 50 backup dancers, all of whom have to fit into a hospital, use hospital props and equipment around them Kripke explained. “The inventiveness of our choreographer, Amy Wright, was just amazing how she put it all together and then had to rethink again, based on the location we found and the hallways we we had to go through and adapt it to this space. You know, I think it was really tough, but I think she did such a great job.”

The Boys has already been renewed for Season 4, and this season has been wild, featuring Jensen Ackles as the explosive Soldier Boy – one of this year’s villains. One of the craziest moments this season so far has been The Deep eating out one of his friends, and actor Chace Crawford discussed the shoot.

In GameSpot’s review of The Boys Season 3, Mat Elfring said, “The Boys continues to be one of the best superhero TV shows. It leans into it every season. It continues to grow and evolve the world it lives in without losing that identity either. The cast here also delivers some of the best performances in the series. Season 3 of The Boys is a must watch. in summer.

New episodes of The Boys arrive on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service on Fridays.
