Even 80 Mondays isn’t enough to stop Garfield. Sony has the film, which stars Chris Pratt as the eternally smug tabby cat, due out February 16, 2024, Deadline reports.
This perfect post-Valentine’s Day movie not only stars Pratt as Garfield, but will also star Samuel L. Jackson as Garfield’s father, Vic. The casting for Garfield’s beleaguered owner Jon has yet to be announced. Mark Dindal (The Emperor’s New Groove) is directing and David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) is writing the screenplay.
Alcon Entertainment is producing the image, with Sony distributing. Previous Garfield films, produced by Dune Entertainment, starred Bill Murray as Garfield; notably, Murray played Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters movies, and the late Lorenzo Music voiced Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Music later voiced Garfield in the cartoon Garfield and Friends. Murray came full circle by taking on the role in the 2004 film and its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, in 2006.
Deadline notes that the only other titles currently scheduled to directly compete with Chris Pratt’s quest for Hollywood dub dominance — he’s also voicing Nintendo mascot Mario in an upcoming movie — are an untitled Marvel movie and an untitled Universal movie that will exit in the same window.
