Pixar’s Lightyear Doesn’t Take Off at Box Office, Falls Far Below Expectations

After its latest films arrived on Disney+ instead of theaters, Pixar’s Toy Story spin-off Lightyear hit theaters this weekend and was expected to make big money at the box office. The weekend figures are now here, and although they made a lot of money, they have arrived well below expectations.

Lightyear – which tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Chris Evans – was set to open with $72 million in the United States this weekend. However, it ended up grossing only $51 million, according to the deadline.

For comparison, Toy Story’s last mainline film – 2019’s Toy Story 4 – grossed $120.9 million in its opening weekend in the United States. Father’s Day weekend in the United States and the Juneteenth celebrated on Monday, June 20, could have helped improve Lightyear’s box office results, Deadline said, but it doesn’t appear to have happened.

Internationally, Lightyear was expected to gross around $50 million this weekend, bringing the film’s worldwide earnings to around $135 million. However, the film only made around $34.6 million in international markets to push its worldwide debut to around $85.6 million.

The film was not released in all international markets, however, as it was not released in Middle Eastern markets and theaters in Malaysia and Indonesia. due to LGBTQ content.

Pixar’s last films before Lightyear — including Turning Red, Luca, and Soul — released straight to Disney+ in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pixar’s Onward, released in theaters at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, made $142 million worldwide before being withdrawn due to the pandemic.

GameSpot’s reviewer Lightyear gave the film a 9/10. Critic Chris Hayner said, “Lightyear is a huge win for Pixar after not seeing its films in theaters for over two years. It’s funny, heartfelt, beautifully done and a great example of how to expand an existing franchise without diluting it.”
