Mario Movie Boss responds to Chris Pratt criticism by voicing main character

The studio head and producer of the upcoming Super Mario movie has responded to the online backlash against Chris Pratt by voicing the main character, Mario. Chris Meledandri from Minions Illumination studio told Deadline that non-believers might come aboard when they finally hear Pratt as the portly plumber.

“When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate, maybe not entirely – people like to voice their opinions, as they should,” he said.

Meledandri, who is Italian-American, doesn’t think Pratt’s portrayal of Mario will offend Italians or Italian-Americans. “I’m not sure it’s the smartest defense, but as someone with Italian-American heritage, I feel like I can make this decision without worrying about offending the Italians or the Italian-Americans. … I think we’re going to be just fine,” he said.

Pratt has been criticized in the past, by Elliot Page and others, for his connection to Hillsong Church. However, Meledrandri did not comment on this in the Deadline interview. Writer-director James Gunn, who worked with Pratt on the Guardians of the Galaxy series, defended Pratt and said people had “totally wrong” beliefs about him.

Meledandri, however, briefly touched on the importance of working with Nintendo. “Nintendo is one of the companies that we respect and hold in high regard; I believe this collaboration is unprecedented in its proximity,” he said.

Reports suggest that the Mario movie, which was recently delayed to 2023, is just the first of several films coming from Nintendo and Illumination. A Donkey Kong spin-off starring Seth Rogen would be on tap next. The existence of a company called Nintendo Studios was recently discovered, and it could be the title of Nintendo’s unannounced film division.

The Mario Movie has a large cast of famous names, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser. Charles Martinet, who plays Mario in the video game series, will have “surprise cameos”.

Very little is known about the story, or any details. Day confirmed in February of this year that he had started recording lines for the film, but he can’t say much more.

“I’d love to tell you all about it, but they’re top secret with this stuff. Absolutely, it’s serious stuff,” Day said. “I don’t know anything. I show up, and they’re like, ‘You say this and you say that.’ And it’s all very funny and good. And then I go out and there’s like two guys in overalls with hammers going, ‘Don’t tell anybody about it, Charlie. I swear to god we’re gonna take your kneecaps, we’re gonna break your neck.'”
