This means that the skill gap between the best players and the less experienced has never been greater. Master the art of the false throw

A dodgeball is a powerful weapon in the hands of a skilled player, but sometimes those are the times when you don’t throw a ball that you have in hand and that can give you the best advantage. Clicking the right stick lets you pump with the dodgeball like Peyton Manning on his kids’ field day. This can catch players off guard, allowing you to trick them into trying to catch the ball you didn’t actually throw. Knockout City is designed so that once you start the capture animation it cannot be stopped, so when your opponents react early they will be stuck in the animation and leveled by your follow up throw. pow!

Passing to teammates is faster than loading a ball yourself

It is important to charge a bullet to make it fly faster by holding down the launch button (right trigger on controllers). You don’t often want to kick the ball slowly – although that has its uses – but fully charging it takes time, so it’s good practice to pass the ball with your teammates. Each time you do, the ball will be instantly charged.

In two-on-one situations, quick passes and timely knockouts can make your team look like the Globetrotters of dodgeball. Passes are often underused outside of top league play, so impress your friends by sometimes sharing dodge balls.

Deflecting a ball is sometimes as effective as catching it

Dodging and dodging are unique dodgeball rules in Knockout City. Generally, an enemy hitting you with a bullet means you are eliminated. But in KOC, dodging an oncoming bullet at the right time will knock it down and you won’t take any damage. This strategy is especially useful when you’re outnumbered and when you’re in close proximity to the enemy, as it will knock the ball out of their hands (and possibly even off the map) and leave them stunned for a while if you tackle them with your dodge.

Catching the ball is the first hurdle to playing well in Knockout City, but the next major filter is finding out who can dodge and who will walk away with dodgeball imprints on their cheeks.

Avoid playing hot potato with opponents

Once you are able to reliably catch a ball thrown at you, you will find yourself in hot potato episodes, where you throw the ball, the enemy catches it, returns it, you catch it, send her back and soon. This should be avoided for two reasons: first, the ball accelerates with each throw and even good players often slip after about three or four volleys. But more importantly, sending him back is often what the other player expects.

Hesitating, even slightly, to reject it or pass it a bit to allies is the smartest play. Just as fake throwing can ruin the expected cadence for an enemy, delaying that potential instant volley for even just half a second can help you land a hit.

Face your enemy

There are many times in Knockout City where running is essential; getting to a loose ball and charging into the scrum to keep teammates on their feet are just two examples. But one time you won’t want to run too much is when an enemy has you in their sights. When it does, your screen will fill with a red frame and the charge ball will show itself as a protrusion out of that frame, and it will move relative to your attacker’s positioning.

Always face your enemy when this happens. This means you may have to back up or strafe left or right, losing speed, but you won’t be able to catch the bullet if it hits you in the butt. Confronting them head-on is extremely important.

Watch your corners

Knockout City can often feel frantic, but like some of the other tips in this guide, we want to help you remember to slow down sometimes. Loading into the turn can give you a problem you can’t solve, and while most players don’t play turns per se, that’s why you should. When an enemy is chasing you or maybe doesn’t even know you’re on the prowl, manipulate the camera so you can see them coming before they get to you.

This can help you launch what is essentially a stealth attack, where they run right into your well-placed trap. For an equally stealthy move, stalk a player from a high advantage and only lock them once you jump down, like a dodgeball-wielding Batman.

Quickly swapping your locked target can catch players off guard

One of our favorite tactics is the quick lockout change you can perform when loading a bullet. If you’re facing multiple enemies, the one you’re locked on will have that aforementioned red frame on their screen, but if you quickly move the locked target to another player and then throw it at full speed, the absence of all the warning can often be unstoppable. Players care who is aiming at them, so if you don’t raise your hand until the last second, they’ll take a dodgeball straight to the nose.

Enticing players to make insane decisions is surprisingly effective

Perhaps the most satisfying thing to do in Knockout City is jump over someone’s dodge and have them spit their heads all over the environment. Like a matador, you can easily bait them using the taunt button (top on the D-pad). Many players will seem to become furious or determined to hit you even without the ball. Having them sniff and smash into a wall – or better yet, charge off the map – is a dastardly and fun way to score a point for your team. I’ve found that the longer a player goes without getting revenge, the worse their tunnel vision gets.

Jumping is almost always better than sliding

You can often spot a new player as they will glide across the map. What would normally be the double jump button (A+A on an Xbox controller, for example) actually deploys your glider in KOC. This is useful for closing a dangerous gap on one of the cards in the deck, but it’s about the only time you should slip. The slide is slow and leaves you vulnerable, while the spin or flip jump can be performed as many times as the distance between your feet and the ground below allows. Any gap that can be cleared without slipping must be cleared in this way.
