Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Here Are All The Details And Rumors So Far

Infinity Ward is leading the development of this year’s Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. After 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard fell short of Activision’s sales targets, expectations are high for the sequel to the 2019 series reboot. Activision is calling Modern Warfare 2 the start of a “new era” for Call of Duty, and we’ve already seen a few trailers. Here, we break down all the details we’ve learned and highlight the leaks and rumors that still surround the game.

Modern Warfare 2 release date and platforms

An official release date for Modern Warfare 2 has now been confirmed as October 28, which is exactly the typical release window that CoD games usually occupy. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is also confirmed to return to Steam, which is priced at $70.

A “new era” of Call of Duty

Some of Modern Warfare 2’s marketing describes the game as a “new era” of Call of Duty. Activision and Infinity Ward gave us a preview of Modern Warfare 2 back in June, where it was explained that the game was designed for “state-of-the-art” connected gameplay based on a unified engine. This redesigned engine will be shared with Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and other co-studios for future Call of Duty titles. Check out our full Modern Warfare 2 preview to learn more about this new unified engine and what this change means for future Call of Duty titles.

Task Force 141 and story details

Much of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019’s story revolved around Captain Price building his signature task force from the original series. So while it’s no surprise, fans can rejoice that Captain Price has once again recruited their favorite Modern Warfare characters for another story.

Modern Warfare 2 follows three years after the events of Modern Warfare rebooted in 2019, with Captain Price’s iconic Task Force 141 now fully formed and operating across the globe. Price is joined by iconic characters Simon “Ghost” Riley, Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, and John “Soap” MacTavish, but this new Task Force 141 also includes a new character known as Alejandro Vargas. Gaz and Ghost were also not in Task Force 141 at the same time during the original trilogy, with Gaz only appearing in the first game and Ghost appearing in the 2009 sequel (the two were also voiced by the same nobody).

The newly formed Task Force 141 can be seen in action during the full Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer, which shows a montage of campaign settings associated with Metallica’s “Wherever I May Roam”. An additional trailer was later released showing gameplay of Modern Warfare 2’s Dark Water night mission, where Task Force 141 must intercept commands for an enemy missile launch.

Multiplayer introduces new mechanics and returns from Ground War

Some of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer modes were also revealed to us during our first look at the game, including the core Call of Duty, Team Deathmatch, and Domination modes. Modern Warfare’s popular large-scale Ground War mode from 2019 also returns this year, and there will be two new round-based objective modes called Hostage and Knockout.

While 2019’s Modern Warfare went quite far with many base multiplayer maps at launch, Infinity Ward said it’s scaled down all standard multiplayer maps for Modern Warfare 2 to cater to traditional 6v6 matches. Additionally, Ground War maps will no longer be larger chunks of traditional multiplayer locations, as the developer said they were separate “battle maps” built from day one specifically for large-scale modes.

Be sure to check out the full breakdown in our Modern Warfare 2 preview to learn more about all the new mechanics and gear coming to the game, which include swimming, new mantling options, new upgrades on the field, and more.

While we don’t have full, confirmed lists of what to expect in multiplayer, Call of Duty dataminer Reality has leaked Modern Warfare 2 perks, modes, field upgrades, and more. However, it’s important to note that this is all said to be from an early version of the game and may be subject to change.

Spec Ops Confirmed, But DMZ Rumors Continue

Infinity Ward has confirmed that Modern Warfare 2’s third mode will be Spec Ops, the popular co-op mode that originated in 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, which served as a series of two-player missions with varying objectives with increasing difficulty. Spec Ops returned 10 years later with the reboot of Modern Warfare in 2019, but the mode has been ambitiously updated to feature four-player squads on larger maps. Infinity Ward game director Jack O’Hara said Modern Warfare 2’s version would be more comparable to an upgrade to 2009’s Spec Ops.

While the Spec Ops announcement should squash rumors that Modern Warfare 2 will include a new Escape From Tarkov-inspired game mode called DMZ, leaks still suggest the mode exists. Notable leak for Call of Duty, Ralphs Valvesuggest the DMZ mode could arrive in 2023 as a free addition to Modern Warfare 2, similar to Warzone’s late launch for Modern Warfare 2019. DMZ would be an open-world mode with a mix of battle royale and survival game elements, and the mode would have been in development for four years.

A map editor is widespread

In early June, RalphsValve also claimed that Infinity Ward is planning a “community-led effort” to create maps for Modern Warfare 2. The leaker suggests that this map editor mode will be integrated as “an offline mode powering players the necessary tools to block, map and modify an already existing map.” Of course, this map editor has not been confirmed by Activision, so rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ricochet anti-cheat coming at launch, plus Warzone 2 details

Activision has also confirmed that players can expect Call of Duty Ricochet anti-cheat to arrive on day one for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. Activision recently announced that it has seen a “significant drop in “cheats for Call of Duty since Ricochet launched in 2021.

The Warzone sequel is confirmed to launch in 2022, expected to follow sometime after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The battle royale is also confirmed to include the same announced vehicles, swim, cloak and mechanics. for Modern Warfare 2, but it’s still unclear whether this next iteration will be a 100% clean slate or include the weapons and skins from previous titles. Here we highlight all the details and rumors surrounding Warzone 2.

Pre-orders and beta information

Pre-ordering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will guarantee early access to the game’s upcoming open beta, but dates have yet to be announced. More Modern Warfare 2 pre-order bonuses may be coming in the future. Reality, the dataminer whose Twitter has since removed, also suggested that the latest Warzone update added references to a currently unannounced “Campaign Early Access” bonus offer for Modern Warfare 2.

As the release date draws closer, Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer details should be revealed soon. Activision also loosely teased that more information would be revealed about a new sandbox mode and a whole new play area closer to launch. We will update all of these details as new information is announced.
