Battlefield 2042 will not suppress Russian forces

Battlefield 2042 developer DICE will not be removing Russian forces from the game following Russia’s actual invasion of Ukraine, the studio’s chief executive has confirmed. Rebecka Coutaz spoke with Eurogamer recently on how DICE is changing – and not changing – Battlefield 2042 as a result of the war.

EA has removed Russian teams, including the Russian national football team, from its latest sports games. However, Russian forces will remain in Battlefield 2042, Coutaz said.

“First of all we were here at DICE of course we were as shocked as everyone on February 24 waking up to see what was happening in Eastern Europe,” she said. “We have a lot of team members from Eastern Europe and we had to deal with that, to make them feel comfortable, and we are here and we listen to them and help them to take care of themselves.”

Coutaz said DICE conducted an “audit” of Battlefield 2042 in an effort to be “as sensitive as possible” to the situation involving Russia and Ukraine. However, the complete removal of Russian forces from Battlefield 2042 may not happen. “It’s very hard to change in this entertainment game,” she said.

An EA spokesperson told Eurogamer that the Battlefield 2042 audit included adjustments to gameplay hardware for Battlefield 2042 and the marketing campaign.

“The Russian and American factions as represented today in Battlefield 2042 will continue in our live service seasons. We continue to monitor it and will adapt as necessary,” the spokesperson said.

EA stopped selling all games and content in Russia and Belarus following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The conflict also affected Ukrainian developers. Development of Stalker 2 has been impacted, with GSC Gameworld delaying the game to 2023 as some of its employees take up arms against Russia.
