Apex Legends Mobile’s Rhapsody is designed with potential metas in mind, including the scan meta

Apex Legends Mobile Season 2 is going well, thanks in large part to the battle royale game’s latest playable legend, Rhapsody. Like Fade, Rhapsody is described as a “mobile-first” Legend, meaning it’s exclusive to the Apex Legends mobile spin-off – at least for now. As a full-time DJ and part-time hacker, Rhapsody is an incredibly fun support legend, possessing powerful sound-based abilities that disrupt opponents and buff allies.

At the start of Season 2, many players – myself included – thought Rhapsody had been brought into Apex Legends Mobile as soon as it was for its ultimate ability, Rowdy’s Rave, which erects a flashing wall of light that blocks the sight of an opponent and scans. It seemed like Rhapsody was a preemptive measure to prevent the Apex Legends scan meta from appearing in Apex Legends Mobile. And while that meta played a part in the design of Rhapsody, it’s not the basis of its design.

“Les joueurs utilisent également [Rowdy’s Rave] to create a sidekick opportunity to move into a more advantageous position,” said Chad Wilson, lead game designer for Apex Legends Mobile. of Octane. We’ve also noticed players using it [passive] ability to successfully follow legends and become a low-key “tracker” character. One cool tactic I’m seeing more and more of is using his ultimate as a diversionary tactic. Since players can’t see if you’re behind the wall, they’ll often shoot through thinking you’re there even when you’re not. It’s the perfect way to trick opponents into revealing their location and surprise them when you appear out of nowhere.”

I really like Rhapsody too, but I’m biased. I’ve wanted a sound-based Legend in Apex Legends for years, though I always imagined they would be more like an auditory variation of Mirage, fooling opponents with noise rather than holograms. It didn’t take the Apex Legends Mobile team years to design and create Rhapsody, so unfortunately I can’t take credit for manifesting its existence, but it did take a while – the process of its creation took months.

“Each of these legends takes a while to create, however, the exact duration is determined by the number of new mechanics and ensuring there is enough time to iterate and refine them to ensure that our mobile legends first feel just as good as the other Apex Games legends,” Shifter said. “But creating a New Legend goes beyond just developing character mechanics. We also need to create all the support content our players expect for new Legends: perks, [cinematics], their history and traditions. All of this work combined is easily over 10 months for each mobile-first legend.”

When creating a character like Rhapsody, you also have to consider the third-person perspective. Apex Legends Mobile supports third-person gameplay, which means character models and new character abilities should be designed in such a way that players understand what they are doing and what is happening to them, what whether they play in first person or third person. -the person.

“Third person [mode] plays a huge role,” said Kevin Childress, Creative Director of Apex Legends Mobile. “This is a special Mobile-first feature that we need to celebrate, as it allows players to see themselves playing in the cool world we’re building. . [Rhapsody’s drone] Rowdy was particularly important here in establishing a third-person visual language and giving players something awesome to look at while running and shooting. We always ask ourselves, “What does it look like in the third person?” It must be great there too! Not only are we looking at abilities, but it includes everything from running animations, slides, replays, and even how each Legend uniquely holds weapons based on their personality.”

Almost everything about Rhapsody has a healthy dose of purple.
Almost everything about Rhapsody has a healthy dose of purple.

Rhapsody also stands out in the Apex Legends universe’s playable roster (consisting of 24 faces if you count all the legends in PC/console gaming and mobile gaming) in terms of color palette and abilities. While many playable characters feature muted colors for their default skin, Rhapsody rocks a vibrant purple. Her abilities are also incredibly flashy and loud – it’s hard to miss her presence in a match. Apex Legends has featured characters with outgoing personalities and obnoxiously obvious abilities before, but nothing like Rhapsody.

“Rhapsody’s hometown is Kómma, which has strong cyberpunk designs and colors – purple being one of them,” Apex Legends Mobile lead artist Bernie Kang told me. “We also wanted his color scheme to stand out among the existing legends lineup, so purple was an obvious choice for the team.”

“Rhapsody’s journey is about performing concerts in an infamous night city, which is both an aural and visual experience, so we wanted players to feel like she could throw a big party anywhere on the battlefield with loud music and dazzling lights,” added Apex Legends Mobile lead writer Mike Rosenthal. “She bombards the senses as a strategy.”

To ensure that Rhapsody would be the best it could be, the Apex Legends Mobile team sought out consultants when creating it. Written as a Vietnamese woman, the team wanted to ensure that Rhapsody was crafted with precision, and so Respawn formed a community council – which included, among others, G4TV host Gina Darling, Apex Legends streamer Samantha Kronos, l ZA/UM writer Elise Trinh, and Respawn lead environmental artist Leah Augustine – to provide commentary on the character’s appearance, mannerisms, and lore.

“Having the right cultural background for a character is critical for us, and the most effective way to do that is to reach out to those who have first-hand experience,” Rosenthal said. “Our UXR team organized a board of Vietnamese women from the Apex community to provide insight into how to develop Rhapsody. Vietnamese EA members also gave us advice. We also hired an amazing Vietnamese-born voice actress . [Xanthe Huynh] who really brought the character to life.”

And, of course, the Apex Legends Mobile team is working with the Apex Legends team to ensure that the lore and character backstory of both games can co-exist in a way that makes sense. “We share our work and seek feedback at every stage of development,” Rosenthal said. “This helps ensure that our new characters fit well into the established Apex universe.”

Only Respawn knows if this means we’ll eventually see Rhapsody transform into Apex Legends for console/PC, either as a playable legend or as a character on a quest. For now, she’s a musical delight in Apex Legends Mobile and a bulwark against the scanning meta.
